[00:00.10]Chapter six. [00:02.89]The cry in the corridor. [00:06.87]The rain began again that night. [00:09.85]It beat against the window, waking Mary up. [00:14.90]She listened as the wind howled round the house and down her chimney. [00:22.97]She tried, but could not get back to sleep. [00:28.84]Stupid wind, she thought. [00:34.98]Then, she heard another noise. [00:39.04]It sounded like crying. [00:43.54]She sat up. [00:47.87]It was someone crying. [00:53.57]She tiptoed out of bed and opened her door. [01:00.58]The crying was coming from the other side of the house, from the part she wasn't allowed to explore. [01:11.52]Taking her candle, she made her way along the corridor. [01:18.85]The crying was much louder here, and soon Mary came to a door where a glimmer of light spilled into the corridor. [01:31.09]She swallowed hard and stepped into a huge room. [01:39.24]There was a fire glowing, throwing shadows onto large, handsome furniture, and in a four-poster bed, a boy, about her own age, was crying his heart out. [01:56.37]The boy had huge dark eyes that seemed too big for his thin, pale face. [02:06.32]When he saw the light from Mary's candle, his eyes widened even further, but the crying stopped. [02:17.50]Who are you? [02:20.49]the boy asked, his voice trembling. [02:24.53]Are you a ghost? [02:28.99]No, no. [02:31.91]I'm Mary Lennox. [02:34.64]I live here. [02:37.20]Who are you? [02:40.95]I'm Colin. [02:44.88]Colin? [02:48.45]Colin Craven. [02:51.85]My father is master of this house. [02:59.79]Oh, Mary gasped. [03:03.72]I didn't know Mr. Craven had a son. [03:09.91]Well, he does, not that he cares, Colin sniffed. [03:19.31]That makes us cousins, Mary said, and told him who she was. [03:25.33]Didn't anyone tell you about me? [03:31.87]No, they probably dare't. [03:36.74]Why? [03:38.89]Mary asked. [03:41.82]I don't like new people. [03:45.46]I don't like being looked at. [03:50.58]Why not? [03:53.50]Colin wiped the tears from his eyes. [03:59.69]Because I shall have a hunchback like my father any day now. [04:07.13]If I live long enough to get a hunchback, that is. [04:13.83]Why won't you live long enough? [04:18.23]Colin stared at Mary crossly. [04:22.43]Because I'm so weak and ill. [04:25.97]Isn't it obvious? [04:29.80]It's not obvious to me. [04:33.13]You just look thin and pale, a bit like I did when I came from India. [04:43.29]What does your father do to help? [04:49.46]My father? [04:52.49]My father hates me, Colin growled. [04:58.17]He hates me because when I was born, my mother died. [05:04.88]The only time he comes in this room is when he thinks I'm asleep. [05:13.26]How, how old are you? [05:17.42]Mary asked. [05:20.59]10. [05:25.17]The same as me, Mary replied. [05:29.61]The same length of time the secret garden has been locked up, she thought. [05:37.98]Mary remembered Martha telling her about the broken swing. [05:44.60]Poor Mrs. Craven, dying without ever seeing her baby. [05:54.90]Tell me about India, Colin said, breaking into Mary's thoughts. [06:04.12]So Mary told him about India, about the heat and the monsoons and the elephants and tigers and Rajas. [06:19.70]Colin listened until he began to fall asleep. [06:25.39]Mary felt tired too. [06:29.69]I am going back to my room now, she said softly. [06:36.89]You must come again, he told her, his voice far away. [06:43.25]Come again, soon.
