[00:39.56] Perhaps a goose with a black bar across the tail.
[00:45.52] Rider's eyes opened wide.

[01:39.77] The game's up, Rider, said Holmes.
[01:45.60] He turned to me.
[01:48.48] Give him a dash of brandy.
[01:52.26] He hasn't the blood for this sort of crime.
[01:58.58] The brandy brought some color back to the man's cheeks.
[02:03.26] He sat staring at Holmes with his eyes full of fear.
[02:08.90] I know enough to put you behind bars, said Holmes coldly.
[02:15.62] You may as well tell me the rest.
[02:20.50] You had heard of this jewel belonging to the countess of Morca.
[02:28.70] It was Catherine Cusac who told me, the lady's maid.
[02:34.42] I see.
[02:36.97] Not a pretty crime, Rider.
[02:41.83] You were happy that Horner should go to prison for it.
[02:47.22] You knew he had a prison record, so you asked him to come and repair the fire in the countess's room.
[02:56.51] You probably caused the damage yourself, and he walked into your little trap.

[03:11.92] Rider fell on the rug and begged at Holmes's feet.

[04:39.09] The police would search the hotel.
[04:42.68] So I went to my sister's house in Brixton Road.
[04:48.66] While we stood in the yard where the geese were, I was thinking how I could get the stone to someone I knew over in Kilburn, someone who might be able to get money for it.
[05:01.27] My sister had said I could have a goose for Christmas.
[05:06.41] As I looked at them, I had the idea that would save me.
[05:12.36] No one would look for the jewel in a goose.
[05:17.50] When my sister went inside, I caught one of the birds, one with a black Bard tail.
[05:27.21] I prized its bill open and pushed the jewel down it.
[05:31.84] It gave a gulp, and the jewel passed down the gullet into the crop.
[05:38.92] Just then my sister came out again.
[05:43.81] I let go of the bird and asked her if I could have my goose for Christmas.
[05:50.54] Of course, she said, take your pick.
[05:58.15] So I caught the one with the Bard tail, killed it, and took it to Kilburn.
[06:07.08] But when we opened up the crop, we found nothing.
[06:13.76] My heart turned to water.
[06:18.70] I left it there and rushed back to my sister.
[06:26.18] The yard was empty.
[06:29.10] All the birds had gone.
[06:33.71] She told me they had all gone to the dealer in Covent Garden.
[06:40.38] Was there another one with a Bard tail? I asked.
[06:46.76] Yes, she said.
[06:49.63] There were two Bard tailed ones.
[06:53.68] I never could tell them apart.
[06:58.94] And that man would never tell me where he had sold them.
[07:04.85] I tried again tonight.
[07:08.44] You heard me.
[07:10.95] My sister thinks I am mad.
[07:14.87] I think I am going mad.
[07:18.99] Now I am a thief, and I have never had any gains from my crime.
[07:27.03] God help me!
[07:29.84] He burst into sobs, his face in his hands.
[07:37.46] There was a long silence.
[07:43.83] At last, Holmes got up and went to the door.
[07:48.59] Get out, he said, opening it.
[07:53.59] Oh, sir, heaven bless you!
[07:58.78] No more words.
[08:01.35] Begone.
[08:05.77] No more words were needed.
[08:09.99] Holmes turned to me, reaching out his hand for his clay pipe and said,
[08:18.68] I am not here to make up for what the police lack.
[08:24.74] If Rider is sent to jail, he'll be in and out of prison all his life.
[08:32.27] He won't go wrong again.
[08:35.53] He's had too much of a fright.
[08:40.22] Nor will he go to court against Horner.
[08:44.94] The case will collapse.
[08:50.86] He stretched out his long legs towards the fire.
[08:56.53] Just think, Watson.
[09:01.32] We began with a hat and a goose.
[09:07.69] Chance placed in our way a most odd problem, and I think its solution is its own reward.
