[00:00.55] Chapter 16. [00:02.44] The story is continued by Dr. Livesey. [00:05.95] How the ship was abandoned. [00:10.94] It was about half past one when the two boats went ashore to the island. [00:16.78] The captain, the squire and I talked things over in the cabin. [00:21.60] If we'd had a breath of wind, we would have attacked Silver's six men on board and made off with the ship. [00:29.54] But there was no wind. [00:31.92] And then Hunter told us the news that Jim Hawkins had got ashore with the rest. [00:39.29] With the men in such a dangerous mood, we feared for his life. [00:48.71] Waiting was a strain, so we decided Hunter and I would go ashore in a boat to see what was happening. [00:56.69] We rode towards the island in the direction of the stockade that was marked on the map. [01:03.38] Silver's men on the shore watched us go by, but stayed with their boats as they'd been ordered. [01:11.85] Once on the island, I went to find the stockade. [01:16.62] It was a log house on the hilltop, surrounded by a fence 6 ft high. [01:24.52] It was big enough to hold 20 people and had loopholes to fire muskets from. [01:31.41] Anyone with arms and ammunition could hold the place against a regiment. [01:38.40] I made up my mind instantly to leave the Hispaniola and move to the stockade. [01:46.85] Just as I was thinking that, I heard the cry of a dying man ring out across the island. [01:54.23] My first thought was, Jim Hawkins is dead. [02:02.73] It wasn't long before we were back on the Hispaniola. [02:07.53] Everyone on board had heard that terrible cry. [02:14.34] The squire was pale, and one of Silver's men, Abraham Gray, looked just as shaken. [02:24.29] There's a man who'll join us if he's steered in the right direction, said the captain. [02:29.67] He's not got the stomach for murder. [02:35.49] I told my plan to the captain, and we soon put it into action. [02:41.30] Hunter brought the boat round to the stern of the ship, where Joyce and I began loading her. [02:49.52] We took muskets, powder, biscuits, pork, and of course, my medicine chest. [02:57.88] Meanwhile, the squire and the captain stayed on deck, where they took Silver's men by surprise. [03:06.62] Smolett called to the Coxson. [03:10.35] Mr. Hans, we are armed with pistols. [03:15.97] If anyone of you tries to signal to your friends, you're a dead man. [03:22.85] By this time we had the boat loaded, and Joyce, Hunter and I made for the shore as fast as we could row. [03:33.87] Our second trip caused the stir among Silver's men sitting on the shore. [03:40.13] Before we were out of sight, one of them went running off into the trees to find Long John. [03:47.63] We landed out of their sight and carried our supplies up to the stockade. [03:54.18] I left Joyce and Hunter on guard with muskets, while I rode back to the Hispaniola alone. [04:05.75] The squire was waiting for me at the stern window. [04:10.29] We loaded up the boat a second time. [04:14.37] Now we had to hurry. [04:17.47] We could hear shouts from the shore and knew that Silver's men had sounded the alarm. [04:25.26] As Captain Smolett climbed into the boat, he made one last appeal to Abraham Gray. [04:32.17] Gray, do you hear me? [04:35.53] I am leaving this boat and order you to follow your captain. [04:42.61] There was no reply. [04:45.31] Gray, I know you're a good man at heart. [04:50.66] I give you 30 seconds to join me. [04:57.76] There was a sound of a scuffle, and Abraham Gray came running with a knife cut on his cheek. [05:05.81] He dropped into our boat and we shoved off from the ship. [05:12.60] We were clear of the Hispaniola, but by no means out of danger.
