[00:04.57] Not long afterwards, the first stranger came to the inn looking for the captain.
[00:10.78] My mother was upstairs with my father, who was very ill.
[00:16.12] The captain was out walking the cliffs as usual, and I was busy getting his breakfast.
[00:23.88] The door opened, and in walked a pale, greasy man, with two fingers missing from his left hand.
[00:36.28] He wore a cutlass at his belt, though he didn't look like much of a fighter.
[00:43.76] Come here, Sunny, he said to me.
[00:49.24] Is my mate Bill staying here?
[00:53.61] He has a scar on one cheek.
[01:00.75] I told him the captain was out walking.
[01:07.26] The stranger waited just inside the door, peering round the corner like a cat, waiting for a mouse.
[01:16.07] I didn't trust him, but there was little I could do.
[01:23.50] At last, the captain walked in.
[01:29.61] Bill, said the stranger, in a voice that I thought he tried to make bold and strong.
[01:38.22] The captain spun round, and all the color drained from his face.
[01:44.37] He looked as if he was staring at a ghost.

[01:58.75] The captain gave a kind of gasp.

[02:06.58] Black dog ordered a glass of rum, and the two men sat talking in low voices.
[02:14.55] I brought the drink and left them together.
[02:19.50] I tried my best to listen from the bar, but for a long time, I could only hear a low muttering.
[02:30.14] Then, voices were raised, and the captain cried out, "No, no, no!"
[02:39.80] If it comes to hanging, we all hang, say I.
[02:48.59] Then, there was a tremendous explosion of noise.
[02:54.86] The chair and the table crashed over.
[02:59.36] There was the clash of steel blades and a cry of pain.
[03:05.85] The next minute, I saw Black dog running out with the captain chasing him.
[03:14.16] Black dog had blood streaming from his shoulder.
[03:23.14] The captain staggered back into the house.
[03:27.69] Jim, he called to me.
[03:31.83] Rum.
[03:34.80] He clutched at the wall to stop himself falling.
[03:39.89] Are you hurt? I asked.
[03:44.16] Rum, he repeated.
[03:48.94] I must get away from here.
[03:52.17] Rum!
[03:53.87] Rum!
[03:58.27] I ran to fetch it, but while I was gone, I heard a loud fall in the parlor.
[04:08.19] When I returned, I found the captain lying on the floor.
[04:14.50] He was breathing heavily, and his face had turned a deathly color.
[04:21.59] My mother came running downstairs, but neither of us knew what to do.
[04:29.29] Luckily, at that moment, Dr. Livesey arrived to visit my father.
[04:37.04] Doctor, is he wounded? I asked.
[04:42.91] Wounded?
[04:45.48] Fiddlesticks, said the doctor.
[04:53.19] The man has had a stroke, just as I warned him.
[05:02.42] He'll kill himself if he keeps on drinking rum.
[05:11.98] Between us, we managed to get the captain up to bed, where the doctor said he must stay for a week.
[05:21.63] If he had another stroke, it would certainly be the death of him.
