[00:00.06] Chapter 22. [00:01.51] How my sea adventure began. [00:04.95] Our enemies didn't return. [00:08.74] They'd got their rations for the day, as the captain put it. [00:13.53] It gave us time to tend our wounded and get dinner. [00:18.21] The squire and I cooked outside away from the loud groans coming from the doctor's patients indoors. [00:25.44] There wasn't much he could do for poor Hunter, who died later that night. [00:31.90] The captain lived, but was badly wounded. [00:35.77] He'd been shot twice, in the shoulder, and in the leg. [00:42.17] The doctor said he shouldn't walk nor move his arm for some weeks. [00:49.43] After dinner, the squire and the doctor sat talking for a while. [00:54.79] To my surprise, I saw the doctor arm himself with a musket and cutlass, put the treasure map in his pocket, and climb over the stockade. [01:05.99] Grey and I watched him as he disappeared into the trees. [01:13.39] In the name of Davy Jones, is the doctor mad? [01:18.27] asked Grey. [01:19.57] Not him, I said. [01:22.83] My guess is he's going to find Ben Gunn. [01:29.85] Meanwhile, there was nothing much to do but sit and wait. [01:36.99] Inside the stockade, the sun blazed down, and I began to feel sick with all the poor dead bodies lying around. [01:45.12] How I envied the doctor walking in the cool shade of the woods. [01:50.34] While I was washing up the dinner things, I began to think of a plan. [01:57.32] Maybe I was foolish, but I was only a boy and I didn't consider the danger. [02:04.89] The squire and Grey were busy helping the captain with his bandages. [02:11.22] This was my chance. [02:13.87] I filled my pockets with biscuits and a couple of pistols. [02:18.75] Then, while no one was watching, I made my escape over the fence and into the trees. [02:27.18] My plan was to find the white rock, and see if Ben Gunn's boat really was there. [02:35.83] I was leaving only two fit men to guard the log house, but that couldn't be helped. [02:42.56] It took me all afternoon to reach the white rock, often crawling through the bushes on all fours. [02:52.04] By the time I'd reached the place, it was getting dark. [02:57.66] Under the rock, I found a little tent of goat skins, hidden by bushes. [03:05.97] Sure enough, beneath the tent was Ben Gunn's boat. [03:13.50] It was a small, homemade craft, rather like a coracle. [03:19.87] Round as a soup bowl. [03:22.65] It was made of goat skins stretched over a wooden frame. [03:28.80] And now I'd found the boat, another bold idea entered my head. [03:34.91] What was to stop me slipping out to the Hispaniola and cutting her adrift? [03:43.74] It was a perfect night for my plan. [03:47.88] Black darkness had settled over Treasure Island, and the night was clothed in a thick fog. [03:56.47] There were only two points of light. [04:00.78] One was from the cabin of the Hispaniola, and the other was the great fire by the river where the pirates sat drinking and laughing. [04:13.25] The tide was already going out, and I had to wade out through a belt of swampy sand. [04:21.45] Soon I had my round boat in the water, and was paddling out towards the shadow of the great ship.
