[00:06.02] The climb was steep,
[00:08.46] and after a while we sat down to rest.
[00:12.78] Ever since the skeleton,
[00:16.00] the men's voices had dropped almost to a whisper.
[00:23.84] "I don't feel sharp," said Morgan,
[00:27.60] "It's thinking of Flint that's done it."
[00:32.62] "He were an ugly devil, blue in the face," said Mary.
[00:38.78] All of a sudden a thin, trembling voice started to sing from somewhere in the trees.
[00:46.11] 15 men on the dead man's chest.
[00:51.78] Yo ho ho, and a bottle of rum.
[00:57.28] The pirates were struck dumb with fear.
[01:01.26] Some of them caught hold of each other.
[01:04.74] Morgan groveled on the ground.
[01:07.81] "It's Flint!" he gasped.
[01:11.73] The song had stopped as soon as it had started.
[01:16.12] "Come," said Silver,
[01:18.59] "It can't be Flint.
[01:20.84] It's someone playing games with us,
[01:24.69] someone flesh and blood."
[01:30.97] The pirates still didn't move.
[01:34.88] Then the voice came again, not singing, but wailing.
[01:41.36] "Darby McGraw.
[01:44.89] Darby McGraw, fetch the rum, Darby."
[01:51.58] The pirates looked at each other, startled.
[01:56.01] "That fixes it," moaned Morgan.
[01:59.38] "Them were Flint's last words."
[02:02.94] "Let's go!" urged another.
[02:08.83] Dick had his Bible out and was praying under his breath.
[02:14.79] Still Silver wouldn't give in.
[02:19.52] "Nobody on this island knew about Darby but us," he said,
[02:25.10] "but shipmates.
[02:28.14] I'm here to get that treasure.
[02:32.30] I never feared Flint when he was alive, and I'll face him dead now if I have to.
[02:40.04] There's £700,000 buried up ahead,
[02:44.46] and Silver's not the man to leave it there."
[02:51.44] I think the men would have run away if they dared.
[02:56.67] Instead, they kept close to Silver, who was thinking hard.
[03:02.96] Suddenly his face lit up.
[03:06.31] "By the powers, I have it.
[03:09.94] That voice was no ghost.
[03:13.79] When did a ghost ever have an echo?
[03:18.05] It's a trick.
[03:21.32] That voice is Ben Gunn's."
[03:28.66] Morgan got off his knees.
[03:30.84] "Aye, so it were, Ben Gunn.
[03:36.26] Why, nobody's afraid of Ben Gunn, dead or alive," cried Mary.
[03:45.19] Soon we had set off again for Spyglass Hill.
[03:49.63] The men had got over their fright and were now chatting together.
[03:56.99] Only Dick held tight to his Bible.
[04:02.67] On the shoulder of the hill we found three trees.
[04:07.46] The third was a giant, with a red trunk taller than a ship's mast.
[04:16.28] Somewhere in its great shadow was the spot where Flint's treasure lay buried.
[04:23.22] The men ran ahead towards it.
[04:27.85] Silver hobbled after them, pulling me roughly along behind.
[04:34.70] Whenever I stumbled, he gave me an evil look.
[04:40.25] With the gold in his sights, it was clear what he had in mind.
[04:46.39] He meant to seize the treasure, find the Hispaniola,
[04:52.50] and cut every honest throat on the island.
[05:00.56] 10 yards in front of us, the men suddenly stopped.
[05:07.77] In a few moments, we were up with them and could see why.
[05:14.39] In front of us was a large hole.
[05:19.79] At the bottom was a broken spade and a few pieces of broken packing cases.
[05:29.10] One of the planks bore the name Walrus, the name of Flint's ship.
[05:39.36] Someone had got to the treasure before us, the £700,000 were gone.
