[00:00.15] Chapter 33. [00:02.93] The Fall of a Captain. [00:05.87] Each of the six men stared into the pit, thunderstruck. [00:11.83] But Silver didn't waste his time on regret. [00:15.39] He had changed his plans before the others had time to get over the shock. [00:21.20] He handed me a pistol and muttered, "Jim, take that, and stand by for trouble." [00:30.03] "So, you've changed sides again." [00:33.89] I whispered back with a look of disgust. [00:37.49] The pirates were leaping into the pitch with cries and curses. [00:42.34] They dug with their bare hands in the dirt. [00:46.94] George Mary found one gold coin and held it up to Silver. [00:53.60] "That's your 700,000 pounds, is it? [00:58.41] Oh, a fine bargain you made. [01:01.66] Dig away, boys," said Silver with a hollow laugh. [01:06.97] "Hear that, mates?" [01:09.32] roared Mary. [01:11.18] "He knew there was no treasure all along. [01:14.76] You can see it written on his face." [01:18.94] "Standing for captain again, Mary?" asked Silver. [01:24.97] The mutineers scrambled out of the pit. [01:29.31] There we stood, five on one side and two on the other, and the pit between us. [01:37.83] Silver never moved. [01:40.53] He watched them as cool-headed as ever. [01:45.24] At last, Mary spoke. [01:49.76] "There's only two of them. [01:52.62] One's that one-legged cripple, and the other's no more than a boy. [02:00.56] Now, mates!" [02:03.21] He was raising his arm, about to charge when, crack, crack, crack! [02:11.74] Three musket shots came from the bushes. [02:16.15] Mary tumbled forward into the pit, and the pirate with the bandaged head fell down dead. [02:24.95] The other three ran for their lives. [02:30.79] At the same moment, Dr. Livesey, Gray, and Ben Gunn burst out of the trees. [02:37.78] "Forward!" cried the doctor. [02:41.50] "Cut them off before they reach the boats." [02:47.74] We set off running, but the mutineers were not running for the boats. [02:52.97] They fled into the woods to avoid a fight. [02:58.52] "Thank you kindly, doctor," said Silver when he caught up. [03:03.89] "I reckon you came in about the nick of time for me and Jim. [03:10.07] And so it was you, Ben Gunn. [03:14.36] You're a nice one to be sure." [03:21.73] Ben Gunn wriggled and grinned. [03:25.73] "How do you do, Mr. Silver?" [03:29.94] "Pretty well, thank you," says you. [03:38.72] As we walked down to the boats, the doctor told us the whole story. [03:45.11] Ben Gunn had found Flint's treasure months before we arrived on the island. [03:50.94] He dug it up and hid it in the cave where he'd made his home. [03:59.27] When Dr. Livesey heard this, he realized the treasure map was useless. [04:05.84] The next day, he'd offered Silver the map, along with the stockade and its stores. [04:14.74] In return, he and his friends were allowed to leave in safety. [04:20.56] They moved camp to Ben Gunn's cave, where they could guard the treasure. [04:26.59] That morning, they'd waited in ambush for us to arrive. [04:31.92] It was Ben Gunn who had played on the pirates' fears of Flint's ghost. [04:41.29] Our next thought was to find the Hispaniola. [04:45.90] When we reached the inlet, we found the tide had lifted her off the beach, but luckily she hadn't drifted far. [04:58.08] Soon we were sailing for Rum Cove and Ben Gunn's cave. [05:07.05] At the cave, we met the squire waiting for us. [05:11.56] He greeted me warmly, but was taken aback by Silver's polite salute. [05:18.99] "John Silver," he said. [05:23.32] "You are a villain and a liar, but the doctor tells me you saved Jim's life. [05:31.88] Very well then, I won't hand you over to the law, but the dead men, sir, hang about your neck like millstones." [05:44.75] "Thank you kindly, sir," replied Silver with another salute. [05:52.96] Gunn's cave was a large one with a spring of clear water at the back. [06:00.68] In a far corner, I could see piles of coins and mountains of gold bars. [06:08.29] At last, I was looking at Flint's treasure that we'd come so far to find. [06:16.97] It had cost the lives of 17 men who had sailed on the Hispaniola. [06:25.03] How many more lives? [06:27.91] What blood and sorrow? [06:31.94] What sunken ships, lies, and cruelty, I couldn't tell. [06:39.53] But the only men of Flint's crew left to see it were Silver and poor half-crazed Ben Gunn. [06:51.81] Captain Smollett was lying by a fire. [06:55.91] Raising himself on his elbow, he said, "Is that you, John Silver? [07:02.02] What are you doing here?" [07:06.84] "Come back to do my duty, sir," answered Silver. [07:14.37] Later, we all ate a hearty meal. [07:19.12] Silver sat with us, joining in the laughter and springing up when anything was wanted. [07:27.66] For all the world, he seemed like the same humble, cheerful cook, who had sailed with us from Bristol.
