[00:06.28] We rode out to the ship in a small boat.
[00:09.80] As soon as we got down into the cabin, Captain Smollett asked to speak with us.
[00:16.01] The captain was a sharp-looking man who seemed angry with everything on board.
[00:22.88] Well, Captain Smollett, what do you have to say?
[00:26.69] All ship shape and seaworthy?" asked the squire.
[00:32.81] "Well, sir," said the captain.
[00:37.27] "I'm a plain speaking man.
[00:40.13] I don't like this voyage.
[00:43.43] I don't like its purpose, and I don't like my crew.
[00:48.54] That's it, short and sweet."
[00:53.50] I could tell the squire was on the point of exploding, but Dr. Livesy cut in.
[01:00.58] "You say you don't like this voyage, sir.
[01:04.98] Why not?"
[01:08.89] The crew knows more about our voyage than I do.
[01:14.31] I don't call that fair, do you?"
[01:18.77] "No," said Dr. Livesy.
[01:21.46] "I do not."
[01:23.39] "Next," said the captain.
[01:27.44] "I find out we're going after treasure.
[01:31.66] Treasure is dangerous work.
[01:35.82] I don't like treasure voyages, and I don't like it when the secret has been blabbed to every man aboard.
[01:46.31] I doubt if you gentlemen understand the risk you are taking."
[01:53.72] "And the crew?" asked the doctor.
[01:59.01] "Aren't they good seamen?"
[02:04.94] "I should have chosen them myself," replied Captain Smolett.
[02:13.14] "Well now, and what does this all add up to, captain?" asked the doctor.
[02:19.66] "What do you want?"
[02:24.18] "Very good," said the captain.
[02:29.23] "If you are set upon this voyage, take my advice.
[02:36.67] The crew are putting the powder and the arms in the bowels.
[02:41.53] Have them brought back here to the cabin.
[02:46.99] Secondly, have your own people sleep here beside the cabin.
[02:54.96] And lastly, there's been too much blabbing of secrets already."
[03:02.90] "Agreed," said the doctor.
[03:06.94] "What have you heard?"
[03:11.67] "That you have a map of an island and that there's crosses on the map to show where the treasure is," said the captain.
[03:21.80] To our dismay, he went on to name the exact position of the island.
[03:29.93] "I never told that to a soul!" exclaimed the squire.
[03:36.47] The captain ignored this.
[03:40.89] "Well, gentlemen," he said.
[03:46.32] "I don't know who has this map, and I wish it to be kept secret from me.
[03:54.28] Otherwise, I ask you to let me resign."
[04:03.83] Dr. Livesy nodded.
[04:07.81] "You advise us to turn the cabin of the ship into a fortress.
[04:15.51] In other words, you fear a mutiny, sir?"
[04:20.48] "I don't say that.
[04:23.49] But as captain, I'm responsible for the safety of every man jack aboard this ship.
[04:33.16] I ask you to take certain steps, otherwise I resign my post.
[04:39.73] That's all."
[04:44.31] The squire blew out his cheeks and looked angry.
[04:49.47] "Sir, we've heard what you have to say and we'll do as you wish, but I think the worse of you."
[04:57.81] "That's as you please," said the captain and took his leave.
[05:07.47] "Treloni," said the doctor.
[05:11.79] "I think you may have got two honest men aboard, that man and Silva."
[05:19.39] The squire replied with a snort of disgust.
[05:26.42] Later, the crew were moving the powder to lodge it in the cabin when Silver came on board.
[05:35.74] "Sir, homates, what's this?" he asked.
[05:41.88] "We're changing the powder, John," answered one.
[05:47.26] "My orders," said the captain shortly.
[05:51.77] "And you, ships boy, out of the way and get below with the cook to do some work.
[05:58.67] I'll have no favorites on my ship."
[06:05.30] I obeyed, but decided that I hated the captain deeply.
