[00:00.05] Chapter 5. [00:00.90] Witnesses of Death. [00:04.58] Never had the kingdom known such a night of storms. [00:08.86] Chimneys were sent smashing, trees were snapped and seized by bloated rivers. [00:15.00] The sea cast boulders at the trembling shore. [00:20.51] Across the heaths, the wind wailed a sad and eerie song. [00:25.38] The sky cried endlessly, and the very land shuddered. [00:31.83] It was weather to gladden a weird sister's heart. [00:39.34] Out of this foul night came Mcduff and Lennox, two noblemen. [00:46.33] They were battered by the storm and unsettled by eerie sounds from the darkness. [00:53.53] The screeching of owls, the muttering of prophecies, and strange screams of death. [01:03.84] With relief, they arrived at Macbeth's gate and hammered for entry. [01:12.95] Old Pickspot, the gate Porter woke with a jump. [01:17.57] All right, all right, he muttered. [01:22.74] Knock, knock, knock. [01:25.87] What a racket. [01:29.61] He took down his keys, called for Maggot, the wolfhound, and made his way across the courtyard like an ambling old tortoise. [01:40.45] Knock, knock, who's there? [01:43.83] Boo. [01:46.82] Boo who. [01:48.84] No need to cry, mate. [01:51.99] I only want to come in. [01:58.24] Mcduff and Lennox, soaked to the bones, hammered ever harder. [02:04.82] All right, I said, mumbled Pickspot. [02:09.43] Blimey, aren't some people impatient. [02:16.13] With fumbling hands, he sorted out the right key, and five minutes later, the gate was open. [02:22.94] Mcduff and Lennox were not amused. [02:27.68] What time were you up to that you sleep so late? grumbled Mcduff. [02:35.90] I really couldn't say, replied Pickspot. [02:40.33] The sun dial never seems to work at night. [02:46.59] Lennox frowned. [02:48.65] What kind of fool are you? he snarled. [02:53.97] That's a very good question, replied Pickspot. [02:59.64] Let me answer it with a story. [03:03.55] Yesterday, I asked the sergeant for a shovel. [03:08.06] He brought me two and told me to take my pick. [03:12.57] I don't see a pick, sir, I replied, only two shovels. [03:20.48] For pity's sake, cried Mcduff, let us in. [03:26.61] Old Pickspot moved aside, and the two men advanced, only to come face-to-face with Maggot. [03:35.62] Does your dog bite? asked Lennox. [03:39.63] Indeed not, replied Pickspot. [03:44.55] Lennox moved forward. [03:47.59] Maggot bared its fangs, leaped up and bit his arm. [03:53.52] I thought you said your dog didn't bite, cried Lennox. [03:58.79] That's the sergeant's dog, replied Pickspot. [04:07.39] The old Porter was living dangerously. [04:11.82] Fortunately for him, at that moment, his master strode into the courtyard. [04:19.78] Macbeth, cried Mcduff. [04:22.59] Thank heaven for that. [04:25.73] Good morrow both, proclaimed Macbeth. [04:33.78] Good morrow worthy fame, replied Mcduff. [04:37.88] Is the king stirring? [04:40.27] Not yet, said Macbeth. [04:44.47] He asked me to call early on him, explained Mcduff. [04:50.56] Macbeth remained calm. [04:53.86] Clearly he had pulled himself together. [04:58.53] He sleeps through there, he said, indicating to the door behind which the night's evil had been done. [05:08.73] Mcduff set off to wake the king. [05:13.47] His innocence did not last long. [05:17.06] Moments later, he was back, his skin gray, his eyes frantic. [05:24.53] Oh, horror, he cried, nameless horror. [05:31.36] What's the matter? cried Macbeth. [05:35.48] Murder, cried Mcduff. [05:42.83] Not the king, blurted Lennox. [05:47.86] Go, gasped Mcduff, see. [05:55.21] Macbeth and Lennox raced across the courtyard, leaving Mcduff staggering like a drunk, yelling for others to awake. [06:05.37] Enter Banquo, closely followed by Lady Macbeth, her face a picture of innocence. [06:14.80] Duncan is murdered, cried Mcduff. [06:21.70] In our house? cried Lady Macbeth. [06:26.93] Say it's not so. [06:32.45] Malcolm and Donald Bane, the king's sons, were next on the scene. [06:39.18] For all Macbeth's fears, they seemed to have heard nothing of the murder. [06:46.44] Mcduff broke the news to them, just as Macbeth and Lennox returned from the king's chamber. [06:54.78] Who did this thing? asked Malcolm, stiff with shock. [07:02.63] We found the king's guards spattered with blood, replied Lennox. [07:08.55] Their daggers were beside them, still unwiped. [07:13.12] And you left them there? said Mcduff. [07:17.49] I killed them, replied Macbeth. [07:22.34] Killed them, repeated Mcduff. [07:25.62] Why did you not interrogate them? [07:32.71] Was I supposed to remain calm? asked Macbeth. [07:39.44] I had just seen the body of our king slaughtered like an animal, and there were his murderers without a shred of guilt, sleeping with his blood on their knives. [07:53.43] What kind of man could have contained his fury? [08:02.32] The king's sons did not look convinced. [08:06.26] It was time for Lady Macbeth to show off her acting ability. [08:11.59] She staggered against the wall in a dramatic swoon. [08:16.71] Help me, she whimpered. [08:21.79] Immediately all the courteous gentlemen forgot Macbeth, rushed to her aid and carried her off to her chamber. [08:32.07] Banquo, however, was not so easily thrown off the scent. [08:39.20] We must uncover the source of this treason, he pronounced. [08:47.02] Indeed, agreed Macbeth. [08:51.44] He glanced into his old comrade's eyes and saw that they were full of suspicion.
