[00:00.08] Chapter 6. [00:02.21] No rest for the wicked. [00:04.86] Malcolm had been named Duncan's heir, and by rights should have taken the throne. [00:11.33] But Malcolm was young and full of fear. [00:14.84] Whoever had killed Duncan was surely after his blood also, and that of Donald Bane. [00:21.64] The two resolved to slip unnoticed from the castle and flee. [00:27.13] Malcolm to England, Donald Bane to Ireland. [00:33.30] There they would find new allies, for in Scotland they could trust nobody. [00:40.20] Least of all their closest relative, Macbeth. [00:45.96] The son's escape was a double blessing to Macbeth. [00:51.65] The last obstacles to the throne were removed, and Macbeth had two prime suspects to blame for Duncan's murder. [01:02.44] They had everything to gain from it, and why else would they flee with such haste? [01:11.28] So it was that Macbeth was crowned at Scone. [01:16.53] Duncan's body was carried to the Isle of Iona, to be buried alongside the kings of old, while his humble subjects wept rivers of tears. [01:31.11] It was dark as night on the day of Macbeth's coronation. [01:37.49] You might have expected a bolt of lightning as Lady Macbeth accepted the Queen's crown, but no. [01:47.75] There were rumors, however, that Duncan's horses had gone wild, broken out of their stalls and turned cannibal. [01:59.42] It was not the only story of unnatural acts. [02:04.80] One farmer told the tale of a falcon killed by an owl. [02:11.20] All over nature, it seemed, lesser creatures were murdering their betters. [02:21.22] So, the murderous couple had achieved their goal. [02:26.42] Wealth, power, and prestige were theirs. [02:33.45] Such a shame that Macbeth could not enjoy his success. [02:39.78] His mind was riddled with guilt. [02:45.64] Nor could he rest an instant, knowing Duncan's sons were telling all England and Ireland that he was a murderer. [02:59.00] Then there was the prophecy of the weird sisters to Banquo. [03:05.63] Thou shalt make kings, though thou shalt not rule. [03:13.39] In other words, Banquo's sons would be the future rulers of Scotland. [03:24.06] Macbeth had come to fear and loathe his old comrade. [03:30.67] Though Macbeth was king, Banquo seemed so much more noble in his nature. [03:38.03] Banquo was not only brave, but honest and intelligent. [03:46.61] He commanded the respect of others in a way that Macbeth never would. [03:53.44] The thought of Banquo's son succeeding to the throne was unbearable. [04:01.03] Macbeth had not gone to the trouble of murdering Duncan for their benefit. [04:11.19] Clearly, something had to be done about Banquo.
