[00:01.00] White Fang, [00:02.96] Chapter one, [00:04.43] The Shewolf. [00:10.48] As night fell, [00:13.63] Henry and Bill heard the first cry. [00:17.50] A horrible whale, terrifying in the stillness. [00:23.31] The two men looked at each other. [00:27.67] Then another cry came, and another. [00:33.17] Wolves! [00:37.92] They're after us, Henry, said Bill. [00:43.37] Best set up camp and get the fire started, said Henry. [00:48.91] They don't like fire. [00:53.95] The two men ate their food while the dogs huddled together. [01:00.40] Not like them dogs to stay so close to camp, said Bill. [01:06.89] At that moment, more shrill wolfish cries ripped the air. [01:14.49] They got ears, our dogs, said Henry. [01:18.83] They know where they're safest. [01:21.67] They'd rather eat dinner than be dinner. [01:27.30] Bill looked thoughtful. [01:30.47] Henry, he said, How many dogs we got? [01:37.31] Six. [01:38.62] You know we got six. [01:43.56] Yeah, we got six dogs. [01:48.07] I gave one fish to each dog, but I'm telling you, Henry, I was one fish short. [01:58.00] Bill stopped and looked at his friend, waiting for the full meaning of what he had said to sink in. [02:07.28] You must have counted wrong, said Henry. [02:13.45] I got out six fish and had to go back for another for old One ear, said Bill. [02:22.03] That's seven fish. [02:27.93] Seven dogs had fish. [02:32.78] I'm telling you the truth. [02:39.64] Henry counted the dogs again. [02:45.38] Well, there's six now, he said, looking at his friend as if he was mad. [02:55.50] Bill shook his head. [02:58.86] I saw seven, Henry. [03:03.34] I saw seven dogs. [03:10.60] Henry sighed. [03:13.58] Bill, I reckon this place is getting to you. [03:18.85] You're losing your grip. [03:22.89] Now, let's get some sleep. [03:28.81] Close by, a pair of eyes like burning coals broke the darkness. [03:38.05] Then another pair, and another. [03:43.37] Next morning, the two men woke early. [03:49.68] Bill counted the dogs. [03:54.28] Henry, he said, How many dogs we got? [03:59.94] Ten, joked Henry. [04:03.66] I guess you're seeing 10 dogs now, Bill. [04:08.80] Wrong, cried Bill. [04:14.03] We got five. [04:17.77] Old Fatty's gone. [04:23.01] Gone? [04:25.97] cried Henry, rushing out to count the dogs. [04:31.52] Bill was right. [04:34.84] There were only five dogs. [04:44.20] That old fool dog, Fatty, said Bill, he must have run out into the night and straight into their jaws. [04:55.43] Even a fool dog shouldn't commit suicide like that, said Henry. [05:02.22] Still, he never was the sharpest card in the pack that Fatty. [05:09.94] The next evening, Henry was heating up supper when he heard a sharp squeal of pain. [05:20.15] Bill was standing over the dogs with a stick in his hand. [05:25.29] I got a whack at it, he said. [05:29.55] What did it look like? [05:32.53] asked Henry. [05:35.61] It looked like a wolf, said Bill. [05:41.03] But it acted more like a dog. [05:45.42] Must be a tame wolf, said Henry. [05:50.39] Must be to come right into camp at feeding time. [05:56.73] That night, the circle of burning eyes appeared in the blackness once more. [06:05.06] Only this time, they drew closer. [06:12.25] I wish we was back home right now, muttered Henry. [06:18.04] I wish we'd never set foot out here. [06:23.47] In the morning, another dog was gone. [06:29.74] Froggy, the strongest dog in the pack. [06:37.03] And he was no fool, Bill said. [06:46.88] That night, a long shadow glided right into the camp. [06:56.07] Then all of a sudden, it moved into the firelight. [07:03.37] It was a Shewolf. [07:08.54] That's the one I walloped, whispered Henry. [07:14.78] She's been leading our dogs away. [07:20.98] There was a loud crack as a log fell into the fire and the Shewolf vanished. [07:29.11] The following morning, another dog, Spanker, was gone. [07:39.60] Back on the trail, Henry stopped suddenly and gasped. [07:46.05] In plain view stood the Shewolf from the night before. [07:53.05] It's her, gasped Bill. [07:57.76] This was the creature that had tricked half of their dogs into the jaws of the rest of the wolf pack, and now it was hunting them. [08:10.09] It was large for a wolf and an odd reddish gray color. [08:18.68] It glared at them hungrily. [08:23.61] Must be some kind of wolf dog, said Henry. [08:30.50] Bill had had enough. [08:34.58] I can't stand it! [08:37.58] he screamed. [08:39.96] She's not getting any more of our dogs. [08:45.88] The creature turned and ran into the forest, and before Henry could stop him, Bill stumbled after it. [08:57.48] That was the last Henry saw of his friend. [09:04.61] Later that day, a search party found Henry and the last of his dogs crouching in his blankets, half mad with cold and fear.
