[00:02.31] Chapter seven, [00:03.10] Friends and enemies. [00:07.14] White Fang never forgot his mother, [00:10.29] or stopped longing for the wilderness of his early cubhood. [00:15.31] But by and by, he began to settle down. [00:23.70] Grey Beaver never petted him again, [00:27.96] but he sometimes threw him a hunk of meat and shooed away the other dogs if they tried to steal it. [00:35.88] That winter, Grey Beaver set out on a long trip overland with his big sled, [00:43.95] while his young son Mitza had a smaller one pulled by a team of puppies. [00:50.81] There were seven puppies in Mitza's team, including White Fang. [00:57.58] The leader was White Fang's old enemy, Lip Lip. [01:03.44] At first, Lip Lip thought it an honor to be leader, [01:09.32] but he soon found it was the worst place to be. [01:14.51] All day long, the other dogs were snapping at his heels. [01:20.87] Worse still, Mitza gave him extra meat in front of the other dogs, and they hated him for it. [01:29.29] Lip Lip became an outcast, just as he had once made White Fang. [01:38.42] One day, Mitza was collecting firewood in the forest when a gang of boys from another tribe attacked him. [01:49.59] A mad rush of anger rose in White Fang. [01:54.66] Mitza, his master, was being hurt. [01:59.74] He leaped at the boys, snarling and snapping, and they fled in terror. [02:07.95] When Mitza told the story in camp, Grey Beaver gave White Fang a huge piece of meat. [02:19.11] The cub then lay down full and happy by the fire. [02:25.75] He had just learned a valuable new lesson. [02:31.50] Protect your master and you will be rewarded. [02:38.71] When spring came, Grey Beaver and his team went back home. [02:45.27] White Fang was now a year old. [02:50.30] Although a long way from being fully grown, after Lip Lip, he was the biggest yearling in camp. [02:59.96] As the months went by, White Fang grew even stronger. [03:06.65] From his mother, he had a dog's size and cleverness, and from his father, the cunning and strength of a wolf. [03:20.74] When White Fang was three years old, there was a great famine in the camp. [03:28.20] There was no food, not even for the man animals, and the old and the weak were dying from hunger. [03:38.45] Several dogs, including White Fang, ran off into the forest to find food for themselves. [03:47.83] Time passed. [03:50.44] Then one day, White Fang was out hunting when he sensed something behind him. [03:58.83] He knew the scent, and it was not pleasant. [04:04.84] He turned. [04:07.82] A dog stood on the path in front of him. [04:13.17] It was his old enemy, Lip Lip. [04:19.45] The two animals stared at each other. [04:24.66] The hairs on White Fang's back bristled and the old anger flooded back. [04:32.48] He snarled. [04:35.66] Lip Lip backed away, then White Fang sprang at him, knocking him to the ground. [04:45.19] He showed no mercy to the old bully. [04:49.80] He was even at last. [04:54.89] Not long after this, he returned to the village. [05:01.01] The famine was over and he smelled food. [05:07.63] He trotted boldly into Grey Beaver's teepee. [05:13.71] Mitza welcomed him with happy cries and gave him a whole fish.
