[00:02.60] Chapter 13. [00:04.08] This cab is taken. [00:08.34] It was election day. [00:10.58] The cab drivers were all busy taking men around the city to vote. [00:16.33] One politician asked to hire Jerry's cab for a whole day. [00:21.48] But he said, "I don't want his posters stuck all over my cab. [00:27.62] It'd upset my horses." [00:33.48] We were waiting for our next ride when a woman carrying a heavy child struggled along. [00:42.68] She seemed lost, and after a bit asked Jerry, [00:48.71] "Which way is it to St. Thomas's Hospital?" [00:55.74] It was the lady's first visit to London. [00:59.99] She had come up from the country to get help for her sick child. [01:06.79] The boy was crying with pain, and even though he was four years old, he couldn't walk. [01:16.08] "The hospital is three miles away," said Jerry, "too far to carry a sick child, especially today when it's so busy. [01:29.24] Thank you, but I'll manage," said the woman. [01:35.96] Jerry would not hear of letting her walk. [01:39.89] The woman didn't have any money for a taxi, but Jerry said he would drive her for nothing. [01:48.27] He was helping her into the cab when two men barged past and climbed in. [01:55.46] "We were here first," they said. [01:59.01] "Hurry up, driver, and take us where we want to go." [02:05.77] "This cab is taken," said Jerry politely. [02:12.46] "Yes, by us," said one of the men sitting down, "and we're staying right here." [02:22.44] "All right, sir," said Jerry pleasantly. [02:27.72] "Stay as long as you like." [02:31.61] He turned his back and refused to move until the men angrily climbed out of the cab and went away. [02:41.33] The young woman was very grateful and could not thank Jerry enough. [02:47.77] It was raining when we reached the hospital. [02:53.00] Jerry helped her carry her son to the hospital door. [02:58.14] On his way back to me, someone called out, "Jerry, Jerry Barker!" [03:09.59] Another lady, whose name was Mrs. Fowler, hurried towards us. [03:17.08] "Jerry, lovely to see you, especially as I need a ride to Paddington Station." [03:29.01] Jerry was pleased to see Mrs. Fowler too. [03:33.82] Years ago, Polly had worked for her, and there was lots of news to swap. [03:41.07] When we arrived at the station, Mrs. Fowler gave Jerry some money to spend on the children. [03:49.62] "You're a good driver, Jerry," she said. [03:54.77] "If you ever want to move from the city to the country, let me know. [04:03.61] I could easily get you a job." [04:07.95] Jerry thanked her and drove home in a very good mood.
