[00:00.33]Chapter five. [00:02.83]Emergency. [00:05.45]Before James left, a new boy came to help John in the stables. [00:11.40]Little Joe Green was only 14, and at first, Mary legs didn't like him. [00:18.76]He's too rough, he complained. [00:22.09]He doesn't know what he's doing. [00:26.96]Joe was keen to learn and worked hard. [00:31.39]And after a bit, even Mary legs agreed that he was going to be fine. [00:39.47]But we were very sad the day James left, and knew we would miss him terribly. [00:46.78]Little did I know then how badly I would suffer without James to take care of me. [00:54.91]One night, not long after James had gone, I woke to the sound of running feet. [01:03.68]Suddenly, John burst into the stable calling, "Wake up, Beauty! [01:10.30]It's an emergency." [01:14.68]The squire's wife was very ill, and John had to ride to town to fetch the doctor. [01:23.21]In record time, John had saddled me up, and we were galloping on our way. [01:30.72]It was a frosty night, and it felt good to be speeding across the silent countryside. [01:40.44]A clock was striking three when we finally clattered into town. [01:47.38]John rode me up to the doctor's door and banged on it as hard as he could. [01:55.68]At last, a window opened. [01:59.47]Dr. White, in pajamas and a nightcap, leaned out. [02:05.85]"What's up?" he asked. [02:09.97]"Mrs. Gordon's very ill," panted John. [02:16.36]"The squire thinks she's dying." [02:21.96]"I'll be right down," said the doctor, slamming the window. [02:30.80]Moments later, the front door opened. [02:35.56]"My horse isn't fit to be ridden," said the doctor worriedly. [02:44.10]"Can I borrow yours?" [02:47.98]"Beauty has galloped all the way here," John answered. [02:55.30]"He should rest, but as it's an emergency, you can take him." [03:03.52]John stroked my neck while we waited for Dr. White to get ready. [03:09.17]"Do your best, beauty," he told me. [03:15.48]I was hot and tired, but I didn't want to let John down. [03:21.65]On the way home, I galloped like the wind, even though I was exhausted, and I was very glad when we reached Bertwick Park. [03:35.33]I struggled up the drive, and as Dr. White went inside the house, little Joe led me back to my stable. [03:45.10]My legs were shaking, and I was drenched in sweat. [03:51.24]Poor Joe, he didn't have a clue what to do with me. [03:58.11]He rubbed me down, but he didn't know that he should cover me with a warm rug to stop me from getting a chill. [04:07.86]Then he gave me a whole bucket of icy water. [04:13.48]It tasted delicious, and I drank it all, not knowing how ill it would make me. [04:24.24]Soon after Joe had left me, I started to feel unwell. [04:31.51]At first, I began to tremble. [04:36.11]I was deadly cold, and my whole body ached. [04:42.90]As the night passed, I felt worse and lay moaning in the straw. [04:50.91]How I wished for John, but he was still walking home. [04:58.24]It was ages before he got back, but when he did, he heard me moaning, and he came straight to me. [05:08.81]"Beauty, you poor thing," he said. [05:13.00]"What's wrong?" [05:16.67]John covered me with warm rugs, then ran to the house for hot water to make me some gruel. [05:24.92]I drank it all, and at last, I managed to sleep. [05:30.95]I was sick for several days with an inflammation on my lungs that made breathing so painful. [05:41.64]John nursed me the whole time, and even the squire kept visiting. [05:49.29]"My poor beauty," he said, "You saved my wife's life, but made yourself ill." [06:02.70]It was good to hear that Mrs. Gordon was going to live. [06:08.67]John told the squire he had never seen a horse gallop as fast as I had the night we went for Dr. White. [06:20.61]I think my grandfather, the race horse, would have been proud of me.
