[00:00.51] Part two. [00:02.97] Chapter three. [00:05.99] The Fish of Steel. [00:11.71] We were pulled down a metal ladder. [00:15.80] And before we had time to look around, we were shoved along a corridor and into a prison cell. [00:25.83] Two men followed us in. [00:31.30] One of them had a broad back and big muscles. [00:37.86] The other one was taller, with cold, staring eyes. [00:44.61] He looked like the one in charge. [00:49.77] I explained to them who we were. [00:53.43] I spoke in French, but they didn't reply. [00:59.16] I tried speaking in English, German, and Italian, but they still didn't answer me. [01:09.09] Perhaps actions speak louder than words, Ned said. [01:14.56] And before I could stop him, he threw the broad-shouldered man to the floor and pinned him down. [01:26.16] Careful, gentlemen, the tall man said. [01:31.40] He spoke in French, so he had understood me after all. [01:38.71] Don't make me angry. [01:41.79] I know who you are. [01:46.29] We aren't on land now, and I don't have to live by your laws. [01:55.36] He was deadly serious. [01:58.99] Nobody else had a submarine like his. [02:03.75] He was all powerful on the sea, safe to do whatever he wanted, and nobody could stop him. [02:14.45] Professor Arronax, he said. [02:20.22] You're in my world now, and here you will stay until you die. [02:28.24] What? [02:29.86] Ned cried, ready to hit him. [02:33.85] You mean we'll never see our friends and families again? [02:41.22] You are prisoners of war, the tall man said. [02:48.92] You're lucky I didn't let you drown. [02:54.81] And now that you know the secret of my submarine, I cannot let you go. [03:07.40] Ned raised a fist, but I held him back. [03:12.50] Even if we could fight our way out of the cell, how would we escape the submarine without drowning? [03:23.51] Who are you? [03:25.55] I asked the tall man. [03:33.05] My name is Captain Nemo, he said. [03:38.52] And you are aboard the Nautilus, the most powerful ship in all the oceans. [03:52.00] It was hard to believe that we were really prisoners. [03:58.81] Before taking us to our cabins, Captain Nemo showed us round the ship. [04:07.22] I could only think that he wanted to show it off. [04:14.91] First, we went into a huge room that Nemo called the saloon. [04:23.50] The walls were covered with shelves, full of hundreds of books. [04:32.48] Amongst these books, you will find yours, professor. [04:39.37] Mysteries of the underwater world, Nemo said calmly. [04:47.50] I was strangely pleased to think that he had already heard of me. [04:57.92] But that book is just the beginning, Nemo said. [05:04.74] You will learn a lot more about the underwater world on board the Nautilus. [05:17.53] Apart from books, there were many other treasures in the saloon. [05:24.60] It was like being in a museum, full of things that lived in the sea or were lost at sea. [05:34.41] There were glass cases of fossils and shells, and aquariums full of coral, seaweed, and multicolored fish. [05:49.06] There were broken stone pillars from the Lost City of Atlantis, bronze fittings from the Greek ships that attacked Troy, Viking helmets, pieces of Roman armor, and a dagger that had belonged to Christopher Columbus. [06:10.44] This was the greatest kind of treasure for a scientist and a historian like myself. [06:19.14] I could write another book on the study of these finds alone. [06:26.97] But Ned was not interested in treasure like this. [06:34.36] His eyes were on the chests of gold coins, rescued from sunken Spanish gallions, and the piles of rubies and diamonds wrapped in a skull and crossbones pirate flag, brought up from the seabed of the Caribbean. [06:54.07] Against one wall, there was a large piano. [06:59.56] Nemo played a few dramatic chords on it as we looked around. [07:07.44] There was more science, history, and wealth in this one room than in all the museums and banks of Europe put together. [07:20.62] I can tell you like the sea, captain, Conseil said, half joking. [07:27.72] The sea is everything to me, Nemo said seriously. [07:35.93] It's a pure and clean place. [07:40.85] The sea does not belong to evil rulers. [07:47.55] Here, I am free. [07:57.49] A few moments later, we passed an iron ladder. [08:02.38] Ned asked what it was for. [08:07.18] It leads to a small boat on the upper part of the Nautilus, Nemo said. [08:17.98] There's a manhole from the Nautilus to an airtight compartment in the small boat. [08:26.20] When the small boat is set loose, the airtight compartment lets us breathe until we get to the surface. [08:38.25] Worth remembering, Ned whispered to me under his breath, for when we make our escape. [08:48.19] I said nothing. [08:52.67] After seeing the library of books and the treasures, I couldn't think of escape. [08:59.54] I could only think of getting to look at them again. [09:06.44] Nemo was showing us the engine room. [09:12.97] My new technology gives my engines endless power, he explained. [09:21.42] You saw the jets of water from my pumps that burst over the Abraham Lincoln. [09:29.39] Of course, I said. [09:34.13] We thought they were the blow holes of a whale. [09:41.32] But how did you build the nautilus without anybody knowing? [09:46.53] Conseil asked. [09:50.67] Each section was made in a different part of the world. [09:56.54] They were then sent to a secret workshop where they were all put together, Nemo said. [10:06.33] We returned to the saloon, and Nemo left us alone to get used to our new home. [10:15.96] Well, Ned said. [10:20.45] Any ideas about how we are going to escape? [10:26.16] I want to forget escaping for the time being, I answered. [10:32.85] Forget about escaping, Ned said. [10:39.10] Are you mad? [10:43.41] This is my great chance, I said. [10:49.51] I could write the best book of my life on this ship. [10:57.54] Isn't your freedom worth more than a book? [11:02.71] Ned asked. [11:06.85] The professor is giving up his freedom for the greater good of science, Conseil said in my defense. [11:17.15] Don't you understand, Ned? [11:21.05] I said. [11:22.63] I've got to see more of this underwater world. [11:27.16] I need to learn about it. [11:31.69] See? [11:33.92] Ned scoffed. [11:36.70] But we can't see anything in this steel box. [11:43.97] A sliding noise interrupted him. [11:47.45] Light burst into the saloon. [11:53.04] Part of the wall opened to show a window that looked out under the surface of the sea. [12:03.68] The water was lit up for a mile in all directions. [12:12.70] Sea creatures of all kinds swam before me. [12:21.92] There were mackerel with blue bodies and silvery heads, Japanese salamanders, jellyfish with violet spots, and serpents with sharp teeth. [12:35.26] It was like looking into a giant fish tank. [12:40.49] Well, now we can see what we want, Ned, I said. [12:51.12] Yes. [12:53.43] I can see that they're free, and we're not, Ned said sourly, pointing at all the fish. [13:03.96] I said nothing. [13:07.53] I didn't want to admit it, but I admired Nemo. [13:14.48] There was something in his steely determination that made me want to trust him. [13:22.02] He loved the sea as I did, and I was happy to be a prisoner if I could learn more than any other scientist in the whole world.
