[00:00.17] Chapter nine. [00:03.01] Captain Walton's story. [00:05.75] How it ended. [00:10.62] When Victor Frankenstein had finished his story, [00:15.17] I could see that he did not have much longer to live. [00:20.16] This terrible quest of his had driven him to exhaustion, [00:25.12] and he was doomed to spend his last days on an ice-bound ship, [00:29.82] desolate, and far from home. [00:36.77] Walton, my friend, he said to me as death closed in on him. [00:44.48] If you should chance to see the monster again, [00:49.60] you must promise that you will do all in your power to kill him. [00:56.48] You have heard my story, [01:00.19] you know he must not be allowed to live. [01:07.91] With that, he clasped my hand and died. [01:16.04] He was a great man, and I believe that, but for these tragic events, he could have been greater. [01:27.07] I left him in peace and prayed that it would be a true peace. [01:36.41] When I returned to the cabin a little while later, however, [01:42.78] I was confronted by a sight that I shall never forget. [01:51.69] A huge, distorted shape loomed over the body of my poor dead friend. [02:01.16] The creature's vast head was bowed, and ragged hair hung down over his face. [02:12.64] And he was weeping. [02:18.87] He turned to look at me. [02:23.37] I saw the deathly pale flesh of his parched face, and recoiled in horror. [02:32.13] But he was not concerned with me. [02:35.77] He gazed back at the body of his creator. [02:43.97] Oh, Frankenstein, he said, forgive me, forgive me. [02:56.84] I have murdered the lovely and the helpless. [03:03.99] My wretched heart is breaking because of the innocent beings I destroyed. [03:13.19] Now, I have driven my own maker to his death. [03:19.92] I am alone, more alone than ever. [03:30.42] He choked over his own words, then turned sharply to me again, and looked at me with dead and ugly eyes. [03:45.82] You need not fear me, he said quietly. [03:53.68] Wherever I have gone, I have been met with hatred. [04:03.36] Now, I have destroyed my greatest enemy and my greatest friend, and all the hatred I have left is for myself. [04:19.59] I watched in horror as he shambled to the cabin window, [04:27.86] a pitiful and a broken figure. [04:33.79] I shall leave now, he said. [04:38.68] My death awaits me. [04:43.98] I shall build a fire that will consume my foul body and burn away all this misery. [04:55.21] And then, pray God, my spirit will sleep in peace. [05:07.78] Then he gave me one last look, leapt from the window, [05:14.64] and jumped down to his raft below. [05:21.40] I looked down after him and saw him carried slowly away by the waves until he was lost in darkness and distance.
