[00:00.37] Chapter 32. [00:02.02] The portrait. [00:04.57] Rosamond was rather like a grown-up Adele. [00:07.97] We became friends, and she often came to see the school children. [00:12.81] Usually when Sinjin Rivers was teaching their Bible class. [00:17.18] She flirted with him in the hope of winning him, and I knew he loved her. [00:23.51] But he poured his passion into his work. [00:28.93] I drew a portrait of Rosamond for her father, and Sinjin, when he came to call, admired it very much. [00:37.87] I felt it would do him good to talk about her. [00:42.07] You'd like a copy, wouldn't you? [00:44.03] I said, "I'll do one for you." [00:47.84] I don't think I should have her portrait, he said. [00:52.44] You should certainly have the original, I told him, meaning Rosamond herself. [01:00.76] She is a sweet girl. [01:03.03] She talks of you continually and she loves you. [01:09.09] What a wonderful idea, he said. [01:13.24] To my astonishment, he took out his watch and placed it on the table. [01:22.26] Let us allow a quarter of an hour to talk of Rosamond, to be married to Rosamond. [01:32.42] Then he fell into a happy daydream of a future with her. [01:38.82] After exactly 15 minutes, he put the watch back in his pocket. [01:45.68] It is not to be, he said. [01:49.10] She could never be a missionary's wife. [01:53.88] Then don't be a missionary, I said. [01:58.58] My great work! [02:01.19] He exclaimed, it is all I live for. [02:08.01] Poor Rosamond, I said. [02:12.16] She will forget me and marry somebody else. [02:18.37] He looked again at the portrait. [02:21.68] Then he cast a sharp, sudden glance at the piece of scrap paper underneath it. [02:29.00] He picked it up, examined it, glanced at me and tore a strip from the margin. [02:37.36] He said goodbye and left in a hurry. [02:43.36] It made no sense to me. [02:46.54] I looked carefully at the sheet of scrap paper, but I saw nothing interesting. [02:53.75] Soon I had forgotten all about it.
